Why You are Struggling to Work Out At Home

Being able to train Muay Thai at home, in the privacy and comfort of your own space, with little to no equipment – that’s the dream, right? So then, why do so many people seem to struggle to make it work?

Transitioning to at-home workouts presents unique barriers to entry. Over the years, I’ve heard from thousands of people trying to train at home only to their efforts derailed. From that experience, I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 problems that people run into when they try to do their Muay Thai workouts at home.

#1 – TIME

Easily the biggest obstacle – and the easiest problem to solve. We squashed this issue by building a weekly workout calendar that took us 10-15 minutes to create from scratch. This allowed us time for our non-negotiables, free time AND workouts every week.

If you need a refresher on “non-negotiables” and how to plan around your existing, busy life, check out my last post.

#2 – MOTIVATION

If inconsistent motivation is your problem, you need a reality check.

First, read about the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Then, you’re going to do an exercise that will help uncover your truest motivations – the ones that you can count on when you are feeling the least psyched to do your at-home workouts.

This will be familiar: it’s called the “why” exercise. Here’s an example of it in action:

👉 "Why do I want to train Muay Thai?"

Well, because it’s going to help me get in better shape.

👉 "Why do I want to get in better shape?"

Well, because then I’ll be able to keep up with my kids – running, playing, being active.

👉 "Why is it important to keep up with my kids?"

Well, because I want to be involved in their lives.

👉 "Why is it important that I be involved…?"

Use this simple thought exercise to dig deeper into your reasons for doing this. Go beyond the “I want a 6-pack” or “I want to be able to kick an attacker’s ass.” They won’t get you excited to do your workouts.

#3 – NO PLAN OR STRUCTURE

Check it out: you can invent your own workouts from scratch – and they’ll be really, really good.

Follow a simple formula:

COMBINATION + EXERCISE + COMBINATION + EXERCISE = ROUND

For example:

JAB-CROSS-CHECK + SQUATS + JAB-CROSS-HOOK-KNEE + SQUATS = ROUND 1

We’ll aim for a minute for each. Anywhere from 60-90 seconds is solid.

That’s a 4-minute round. Now let’s some more together, with 1 minute for each combo and exercise:

ROUND 1
JAB-CROSS-CHECK + SQUATS + JAB-CROSS-HOOK-KNEE + SQUATS

ROUND 2
JAB-CROSS-KICK + PUSHUPS + CROSS-HOOK-CROSS-SWITCH KNEE + PUSHUPS

ROUND 3
TEEP-TEEP-CHECK-CHECK + BURPEES + JAB-CROSS-HOOK-CROSS + BURPEES

Voila – a 3-round Muay Thai workout that’ll sharpen your technique and drench you in sweat. The best part is that you can do this at home and with bodyweight only.

Making your own workouts is one thing, but making sure you’re on a progressive track? That’s more challenging. For that, you should rely on a progressive workout program like the Fighters Body Academy, with 24 months of pre-planned calendars and follow-along workouts.

To give you an idea of what I mean, check out this demo workout from my course. I’ll show you the moves, you do what I do.

REPEAT EACH DRILL FOR 60-90 SECONDS

#4 – NO COACH OR PARTNERS

Years ago, I trained primarily on my own. Leading up to my first title fight (which I won, by the way), I was my own coach and my own partner. 80% of my training was done solo. Sometimes, it felt like I was talking at a brick wall – no feedback or corrections at all. It took time to learn to be my own coach and be the best I could be without anyone’s help.

Today, however, there are so many online coaches that I would have loved to have taken advantage of back in the day. Trainers who can give you feedback after watching you perform and ensure you’re following a properly progressive path that’ll lead you where you want to go. I’m one of those coaches, and I coach hundreds of students inside the Fighters Body Academy. It’s totally online, but these folks are finding out just how effective it can really be. It’s awesome, as a coach, to see the huge progress from month to month – not just in technique and fitness and the physical changes but also in members’ MINDSETS and CONFIDENCE.

THE 5th OBSTACLE TO TRAINING AT HOME?

That 5th obstacle to training Muay Thai at home… will be my main focus in the next post. Keep an eye out for the final post in this Muay Thai at Home Crash Course series. Stay tuned for more.

P.S. In the meantime, apply what you’ve learned today. Give yourself a reality check and discover your true motivations. Create your own Muay Thai workout (or better yet, follow me in the demo workout above). And if you’re ready to go all in, consider seeking out a progressive at-home workout program that guarantees you see the results you want.
